While she was keen to become a lawyer, her success in the Project has inspired her to become a writer! However, I generally like very, very dark books, so I chose to review this one to see if Strand's style of horror and comedy could crack my black soul. Knowing his fight with ALS makes his words even more poignant but his personality and devotion to people and many causes have remained constant from the first time this reviewer met him years ago.

A stand-out story for me is Brownlees Blue Flame, in which Death witnesses something never seen before. As he tries to discover its meaning, Death sees how it will inevitably affect the human race. Another story I thoroughly enjoyed is The Abbott and the Dragon, which takes a different look at the zombie apocalypse, in both how it started and where civilization, or whats left of it, has gone. Birthright takes an interesting look at Hell, the fallen angels, and demons, and A Carrion to Wounded Souls is a very disturbing story involving a child murderer ref.: http://soniceventproductions.com/?books/el-inquisidor-de-ma-xico-el-amor-frustrado. It’s no surprise, then, that my favourite all-original thematic anthology ever is a superhero anthology: Who Can Save Us Now? Brand-New Superheroes and Their Amazing (Short) Stories, edited by Owen King & John McNally. In fact, three of its stories made it into my retrospective superhero anthology. There are also (although not common now) all-original anthology series built around the literary reputation and acumen of a specific editor: Robert Silverberg’s New Dimensions, Terry Carr’s Universe, Damon Knight’s Orbit ref.: http://soniceventproductions.com/?books/city-of-kings-discoveries-series. Novels are big, complex creations that typically take a long time to write. Trying something drastically new is risky, as a failed novel can be a major blow to a writer’s career. Short stories, on the other hand, take much less time to write, and if a single short story in which you try something new doesn’t work, the impact to one’s career/fan-base is minimal http://icarservice.com.ua/freebooks/hooking-watermelons-1898. This volume inspired the Harlem Renaissance generation to establish firmly an African-American literary tradition. Most of the stories appeared first in science fiction and fantasy magazines, but some have made their first appearance in books, collections, anthologies, and non-SF magazines. Though Asimov was most famous for his science fiction, he also wrote a good number of mystery stories, and even combined the genres to create science fiction mysteries. He also wrote a few pieces that could be classified as fantasy , e.g. http://arx-idea.ru/ebooks/pacos-tales-this-is-a-historical-novel-of-forty-years-of-texas-history-seen-through-the-eyes-of-a. Pharoh's Dream: The Secret Life of Stories. The Nineteenth-Century American Short Story http://dacisgroup.com/library/school-for-lovers-other-tales. I keep pushing Truman Capote's short stories. The recent movies were interesting but emphasize In Cold Blood at the expense of the stories, which are actually his best work. The only thing I still remember from Capote's Music For Chameleons was the not-short, Handcarved Coffins, but that was really outstanding ref.: http://maadi.info/?books/the-war-of-the-peek-freans-light-wounded-a-short-story-set-at-the-start-of-the-second-world-war.
