The corny 1978 original mercifully died after a single season. Like any critic who takes on the dubious task of canon building, I have here claimed a kind of ownership of the genre by listing those whom I think belong and omitting those whom I believe do not. Well, it appears that he is using the term “representational” figuratively (not literally as in ‘image’), to denote the “representation” as a metaphoric reflection of “the contemporary world.” That this “representation” is also an appartus, references the fact that Jameson is operating from a position in literary criticism, offering apparatus as a critical apparatus. Planets, asteroids and natural satellites only shine with reflected starlight.
